Deep Madder Radio Ep. 9
by Alexander
The ninth episode of Deep Madder Radio has finally arrived after an insufferable wait of ten months! Luckily for our most avid of listeners, said lateness will somewhat be compensated by the fact that this is the best episode ever. It is a portion of our interview with L. Ulrich from 20 June 2011 (which we have yet to turn to episode) in which we debated the merit of reading versus fornication. Guess who's on which side?
It should be noted that the constant clacking sound throughout the conversation is a result of both mine and Alexander's tendency to slap our knees (or nearby surfaces) when finding something particularly humorous or ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThe music is a nice touch.
ReplyDeleteI love how at the end of the day, the basis of your end of the argument is that reading isn't enjoyable.
Also, I love reading- out of pure hedonism.
Ha, lins. "Having sex with your partner is a really good thing to do."
ReplyDeleteI agree with you entirely, it's just funny that you've been put in a situation to have to say it that literally.
Another point- where do you think Lil' Suzie came from? The stork?

ReplyDeleteAlso, the average birth rate is still above 1, which means I think that a favourable number of people have access to sex.
So it raises doubt on this question of accessibility too.
"If I punch Alexander behind a curtain, it doesn't make it any less wrong."
ReplyDeletehaha what a ludicrous analogy!
Haaa...
ReplyDeleteOk Chris and Alex, what would be a more suitable activity for you two as Deep Madderians:
1) A sensuous reading of erotica to each other behind a curtain (notably, a pleasurable experience), OR
2) Silently making puritanesque love to your partners while you have a pounding headcold in private as a congratulatory gesture when they make some kind of outstanding community contribution. Let's say they've singlehandedly tolled every non-bike form of transportation in Toronto, or eliminated the word, "boobs" from the english language or something.
1. It's not that reading isn't enjoyable, it's that it's clearly far less enjoyable than sex, but it has broader benefits.
ReplyDelete2. Having sex with a partner is a somewhat bad thing to do, but we do it anyway. It's an indulgence.
3. Little Suzie shouldn't exist.
Lindsay's voice as it ends very sad.

ReplyDeleteIt's not always less enjoyable than sex. Maybe we should have an addendum conversation where we talk about the benefits/drawbacks/ of both. I agree that reading War and Peace is probably better than having sex, but I'm guessing not to the degree that you do. I also think you're discounting the 'broader benefits' that sex might bring about in society.
2. Having sex with a partner is a somewhat bad thing to do, but we do it anyway. It's an indulgence.
My point was that so is reading. If having sex is bad, then breathing is bad. Criticizing an animal for indulging in creature comforts is like slapping a cat for killing a mouse.
3. Little Suzie shouldn't exist.
I agree.
