The Christening of D.M.
by Alexander
I just discovered the instant messaging transmission between myself and Christopher from 16 January 2007 in which the name Deep Madder was decided on (in which “Valley Man” is my inexplicable I.M. pseudonym [Remember: We were only 22 years old]).
Valley Man says: (1:55:38 PM)
hey i was using some pastels last night, and i noticed one colour called Deep Madder / and that was one of the best sounding names ever. / so i wanna make a band called that, or a record label or something
Chris says: (1:56:01 PM)
ha, yeah, seriously. it reminds me of alice through the looking glass or whatever / maybe we should name our record label that
Valley Man says: (1:56:21 PM)
i agree / plus, it sounds like Deep Matter, but with a twist of 'madness'. not to mention it makes me think of 'murder'. ha, maybe it's too dark / plus, the pastel colour was red
[. . .]
Chris says: (1:57:54 PM)
yeah, i think we should name our label that
Valley Man says: (1:58:01 PM)
yeah me too. great / plus, i wanted our label name to be three syllables, so it's great.
Chris says: (1:58:35 PM)
yeah, I really like that name actually. it's perfect.
Related to this is the conversation below, taking place on January 2nd, 2006 (over a year before the aforementioned conversation), that demonstrates just how long our notion of creating a label had been fermenting, and our initial attempts at names.
ReplyDeleteAlso of note is how this conversation takes place minutes after Alexander reveals of his decision to change his musical name from "Human" to "Lanterns"
Baking Greed = Alexander
The difference... = Christopher

ReplyDeletewow. i'm really happy about our future. Lanterns. what should we call our record/publishing label/company? / Weather Records & Stuff/ Blue Man Records
/ Human Records
ha, perfect! / human can be used for a record label name.
The difference is unsettling says: (4:22:35 PM)
there already seems to be one
Baking Greed says: (4:22:47 PM)
it seems more appropriate for something like that, too. what do you think? because it's more of a boast.. like 'our music contains... oh. fuck. those fucking idiots
The difference is unsettling says: (4:22:52 PM)
[How about] Illuminated Human Records[?]/ that combines lanterns and human
[...]
Baking Greed says: (4:26:48 PM)
what the fuck. stupid motherfuckers. who the hell would think of something like that? it's absurd. / they must've sneaked into my apartment and read my notes or something.
Hahaha, this second conversation is really funny! I love Alexander's moment of realisation...
